Sylvia van Opstall

Sylvia van Opstall (Capelle aan den IJssel, 1965) creates layered artworks in which relief, metal leaf, paint, paper and textiles come together. Her work moves between different disciplines and is characterised by a clear visual language, refined structures and a distinctive interaction with light.

Fascinated by the power and beauty of tapestries and icons, among other influences, Sylvia explores how light responds to relief and subtly applied metal leaf. Large abstract forms are combined with graphic elements that occasionally suggest recognisable figures. She draws inspiration from patterns and rhythms found in traditional crafts, such as Japanese lacquer art, as well as from nature and molecular structures.

The combination of relief and metal leaf gives Sylvia van Opstall’s artworks a dynamic and ever-changing character. Depending on the light and viewing angle, different structures, nuances and details become visible. As a result, her work develops a strong relationship with the architecture and the space in which it is placed.
