Suus Kooijman

Suus Kooijman (Stoutenburg, 1960) studied at the Utrecht School of the Arts. Her paintings are characterised by the use of beeswax and pigments, with which she creates transparent, layered works that often take on the character of wall objects. The warm wax and pigments flow through and over one another, allowing unexpected images and structures to emerge during the painting process.

Because of the many layers, the image exists not only on the surface. The transparency of the beeswax gives her paintings a distinctive sense of depth and invites the viewer to look more closely. Suus deliberately seeks to create images that do not reveal everything immediately, but instead leave space for personal thoughts, emotions and memories.

Abstract and figurative art

Two distinct directions can be recognised within her work. In her often large-scale abstract paintings, Suus creates a dynamic interplay of light, shadow, rhythm and depth through cut geometric forms. In her smaller works, landscapes and human figures appear partially concealed behind transparent layers of paint. This creates a quiet, almost mysterious visual language.
