Reinder Schmidt

Reinder Schmidt (Arnhem, 1993) is an artist and designer with a background in fashion. He graduated from the Fashion department of the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design in 2015. Driven by his fascination with textiles, craftsmanship and materials, he developed his own form of textile art, giving new life to residual materials sourced from, among others, the Dutch fashion and furniture industries.

For his abstract artworks, Reinder stitches together different pieces of leftover textile to create a new canvas. The variety of fabrics, seams and textures creates relief and depth, after which a layer of paint visually unifies the composition. This shifts the focus towards form, rhythm and the subtle variations across the surface. The process of making therefore becomes an essential part of the artwork itself.

Textile Landscapes

In his Textile Landscapes series, Reinder Schmidt explores the beauty of material, texture and reuse. The textiles lose their original function, while traces of seams, folds and contrasting fabrics remain visible. Light moves across the textured surface, allowing the work to be experienced differently throughout the day. His art combines a minimalist aesthetic with craftsmanship and a conscious approach to materials that might otherwise remain unused.
