Kieta Nuij

Kieta Nuij (Heerlen, 1960) has been working as a sculptor since 1984. After an early period in which she mainly worked with clay, she has been creating bronze sculptures for more than 35 years. Her work has a distinctive visual language in which form, texture and patina come together in a compelling balance. In 2024, Kieta celebrated her 40th anniversary as an artist.

The forms of her sculptures develop intuitively during the creative process in her studio. Rather than being fully conceived in advance, they gradually emerge through the material itself. In this way, Kieta seeks to make inner emotions and experiences visible and tangible. Her bronze sculptures combine stillness, grace and beauty with tension, vulnerability and a sense of transience.

Figurative bronze sculptures

The human figure plays a central role in Kieta Nuij’s work. Her figures become carriers of emotion and inner experience, bringing what is usually invisible to the surface. The sculptures are restrained and contemplative, while their surfaces can be raw, marked and expressive. This contrast between opposing qualities gives her work its distinctive strength.

Kieta studied at the Stadsacademie voor Toegepaste Kunsten in Maastricht and later completed, among other programmes, the postgraduate course Art in Commission at Academie Minerva. She also further developed her expertise in portrait and figure modelling.
