Diana Bongers

Diana Bongers (Helmond, 1979) is a visual artist and designer. She studied at the Royal Academy of Art and Design in Den Bosch and subsequently worked for many years as a freelance designer for the international wallpaper and textile industry. She specialised in abstract, geometric and richly textured designs. Her handmade designs were included in the collections of renowned wallpaper brands such as Arte, Graham & Brown and Marburg.

After periods in Den Bosch, Amsterdam and Utrecht, Diana returned to Helmond in 2012, where she settled in the midst of nature. The rhythms, structures and continuous changes in her surroundings became the inspiration for her Paperfield series: handmade paper wall objects in which colour, repetition, relief, light and shadow come together.

In her Paperfield artworks, Diana Bongers translates natural patterns and repetition into abstract, geometric compositions. Each wall object is built up from numerous individual pieces of paper, which are painted, folded and carefully assembled by hand. Through repetition, an organic whole emerges with a strong sense of rhythm and movement.

The relief gives the works a distinctive spatial quality. Depending on the incidence of light and the viewer’s position, colours, shadows and structures continually change. In this way, the Paperfield works exist somewhere between painting, relief and sculpture. On the wall, they become artworks shaped not only by colour and composition, but also by the light and space in which they are placed.
