Ans Pullens

Ans Pullens is a Dutch visual artist who works with ceramics, porcelain, glass and mosaic. Experimentation with materials, new techniques and distinctive forms lies at the heart of her work. Her best-known artworks are the Ceramic Paintings: three-dimensional, sculptural compositions in which hundreds of individual elements come together to form a rhythmic wall object.

A defining example is her Wave series, created in porcelain. Each porcelain element is shaped individually by hand, making every component unique. The different positions of the elements create a subtle interplay of light and shadow. Depending on the light and the viewer’s position, the colour nuances within the work also appear to shift continuously.

The Ceramic Paintings exist at the intersection of painting and sculpture. Instead of paint, Ans Pullens uses ceramic and porcelain elements to build up the composition. This gives the artwork a tangible structure and allows its appearance to change throughout the day as the light within the space shifts.

Ans finds inspiration in everyday forms, objects, plants, animals and human structures. By enlarging details and reducing them to form, rhythm and repetition, she creates an abstract interpretation of reality. The result is not a literal representation, but a new way of looking at familiar forms and patterns.

Unique artworks in ceramics, glass and mosaic

In addition to porcelain, Ans Pullens works with ceramics, glass and mosaic. Her extensive knowledge of materials and techniques stems from several specialised programmes. She completed the Higher Degree in Ceramics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arendonk and studied mosaic and fresco, specialising in restoration, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. She also trained in couture in ’s-Hertogenbosch. Her work can be found internationally in private collections and in the collections of companies and art collectors.
