Alisa Lim A Po (Amsterdam, 1975) is a Dutch visual artist. Her work explores human behaviour and the emotions that arise from it, from happiness and desire to sadness and fear. At Studio Co van der Horst, we present a selection of paintings and wall objects by Alisa Lim A Po, including works from her Monochromen and Scapes series.

Experimentation and artistic development form a continuous thread throughout her work. The colourful visual language that characterised her practice for many years gradually gave way to more restrained and monochromatic compositions. Black initially took on a prominent role, sometimes combined with a single supporting colour. Her visual language also evolved from figurative work towards increasing abstraction, creating more space for stillness, reduction and minimalism.

Although her work continues to evolve, the exploration of emotion, meaning and human experience remains at its core. By reducing colour, material and form to their essence, she creates a visual language that does not define everything, but instead leaves room for the viewer’s own interpretation.

Materials, scale and technique

Alisa Lim A Po continuously explores new materials, techniques and surfaces. She deliberately varies scale, medium and finish, selecting the combination that most powerfully expresses the idea behind each artwork.

As a self-taught artist, she has continued to expand her technical skills and use of materials throughout the years. Painting, mixed media and sculptural elements frequently merge within her practice. As a result, her works can be experienced as paintings, reliefs or sculptural wall objects.

• Monochromen

In her Monochromen series, Lim A Po makes a distinct move towards reduction. Colour and figurative elements give way to powerful monochromatic surfaces and subtle colour accents. By deliberately removing elements, greater attention is drawn to material, texture, composition and the physical presence of the artwork. The works can therefore feel both powerful and serene, making them particularly suited to interiors in which art is given a strong and autonomous presence.

• Scapes

The recent Scapes series consists of paintings and wall objects in which Alisa Lim A Po continues to experiment with material, movement and surface. Oil pastel and mixed media, among other techniques, give the works their layered and tactile character. The interplay between abstraction, landscape, material and imagination leaves room for a personal interpretation of each work.
